Measles Antibody Titers in School-Aged Children

Abstract
Background:
@EN Despite appropriate preventive measures, several measles outbreaks occurred in the years 1988-1990 and 1993 in Korea. There were 2 types of outbreaks: in one type, most cases occurred among infants below the age of 9 months and in the other,
most of
the cases occurred among vaccinated children above the age of 6 years, including school-aged children. After such outbreaks, temporary revaccination of children above the age of 6 years was recommended by Infectious Disease Committee of Korean
Pediatric
Society to protect school-aged children. But there was a lack of supportive data. To evaluate the effect of current measles vaccination and to determine the necessity, as well as the appropriate age of revaccination, we measured the measles
antiboty
titers from the sera of upper grade children in elementary school.
@ES Methods
@EN One hundred and thirty-six school-aged children from 10 to 13 years old were classified into 2 groups, according to measles history. Group I consisted of 40 who had measles, and group II consisted of 96 who had no measles specific IgG
antibody
titers[Arbitrary Unit(AU)/ml] were measured with ELISA method[SIATM Measles IgG Kit (Procedure No. SIA 129)]. 2 test and student t-test were performed to analyse the data.
@ES Results:
@EN Between group I and II, there was a significant difference in measles specific IgG antibody titers(300.53 163.47 AU/ml and 241.59 122.59 AU/ml, p<0.05). In group II, the seropositivities of one-dose and two-dose vaccinee were 77.9% and 100%.
There
were no significant differences in seropositivitv and IgG titers between the one-dose and two-dose vaccinee subgroups.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN Our results support the current two-dose measles vaccination schedule and therefore necessity of revaccination to school-aged children who had only one-dose vaccination.
